Doja Cat Says Her Next Album Will Be Rap
Doja Cat is preparing her next action.
Following the unexpected news that she had to leave her tour with The Weeknd due to tonsil surgery, Doja announced that she had more time to work on new music, including her next album, which she said would be predominantly rapping.
She made the revelations in the June/July 2022 issue of ELLE. “I didn’t start just because of rehearsal and touring. I have a lot going on, but it’s coming,” she told the magazine before canceling tour dates.
The new project that followed Planet Her last summer is still in its early stages. “Songs and things are being sent to me… Oh f**k, I wish I could tell people! There are some really cool things I send out of friends. They all work on rhythms and I give them notes and they know what I want, so I’m excited.”

Doja Cat Decides to Make Rap Music Its New Album
While her genre-blending voice includes R&B, hip-hop and pop, Doja is a rapper at heart and has revealed that she grew up with artists like Busta Rhymes and Lauryn Hill.
“When I was little, that was all I listened to,” she says, adding that she knew her “true fans” were raping. “I’ve been rapping since the beginning and I couldn’t even sing as well in the beginning — I got so much better.”
Despite the controversy over what qualifies as rapper, she has learned to live with critics who don’t consider her rapper. “I use my voice as a tool to create these worlds, and it’s okay if people think I can’t rap,” he says, adding, “The only person who should be able to rate hip-hop is someone who is respected in an OG or hip-hop.”
