Elon Musk Battles SEC With Eminem Lyrics
Elon Musk brought up Eminem. The issue is a legal battle with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
According to documents obtained by The Verge, Elon Musk referred to one of Eminem’s best-known songs, “Without Me”, in a court filing. The billionaire likened Eminem’s past problems with the FCC to a consent decree that allegedly prevented him from speaking freely.
“The First Amendment requires that agencies proceed with caution when constitutional rights are at stake. Not seek to pursue any and all novel theories that broaden their authority at the cost of individual freedom,” the file states.
Elon Musk was investigated by the SEC for allegations that he made misleading statements. The government, on the other hand, took Tesla under scrutiny over alleged funding on Twitter. A settlement was reached with the SEC in 2018. According to this agreement, the SEC needs to monitor Elon Musk’s statements on social media about Tesla.
Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy.
